Making Phone Calls on the iPad Using Skype
The unique feature about iPad is that it can transform itself into various devices with the right kind of applications. iPad with 3G is not suitable for making calls as it supports only internet data traffic. However, user can make phone calls with iPad using VoIP (Voice over IP) technology that allows to make phone calls over the internet connection. User can download the free Skype application on to his iPad, and user can make calls using the iPad’s built-in speaker and microphone. Thus, it is so easy to make a call direct to other Skype users on PCs or mobile devices for free. Moreover, user can make affordable calls to landline and mobile numbers by purchasing Skype credits.
Using the Skype for making free calls is useful for international calls, where Skype’s per-minute charges are significantly lower than conventional mobile or landline tariffs. User can use the built-in mic and speaker for making calls at home. However, in office or outside home, user needs to use a headset with a mic. One of the drawbacks with iPad is that it only supports modern A2DP/AVRCP and PAN standards and there are only few headsets that use these protocols. However, this is not the case with iPhone which supports all Bluetooth headsets.
Apart from the compatible headsets, iPad comes with few other limitations. There are some services like Fring that allows the user to make calls over 3G by compromising on the quality, however Skype only permits the calls to be made over Wi-Fi. Therefore user gets depended on hotspots for making the calls with Skype. Moreover, user can’t use Skype for making calls to the emergency services and user needs to keep check on the data usage with capped iPad tariffs. Also, if the Skype application is not running then user can’t receive calls to his SkypeIn number.
