VoIP Hardware Devices
In order to place and receive VoIP calls over the internet, user needs certain VoIP hardware devices. User is required to do a proper hardware setup that will allow them to achieve high quality call clarity with significant reductions in telephone bills.
There are various VoIP hardware devices available and it depends on the specific requirement of residential or business customers to use a suitable VoIP hardware. It ranges from a simple headset with PC or detailed set of network equipments that comprises of routers and phone adapters.
Some of the commonly used VoIP Hardware devices are as follows:
PC Handsets
PC Handsets are basically meant to provide the features of telephone. They get connected to user PC via USB or a sound card. PC handsets are used along with softphone that allows the user to make VoIP calls with great ease and convenience. PC handset can also be plugged into an IP phone and thus allows multiple users to use the same phone.
PC Headsets
A PC headset is basically a multimedia device that allows the user to listen to audio from his PC and make calls by using a microphone. It is very commonly used VoIP device for making calls.
Analog Telephone Adapters
An Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) is also known as a phone adapter simply. It is a key device that functions as a hardware interface between a digital VoIP line and an analogue PSTN telephone system. It converts the analog signals into digital voice packets at the call origination point and on the receiving end it converts the digital voice packets back to analog voice signals.
User do not require phone adapter if he using PC-to-PC VoIP. It is required when user is making use of existing telephones or using monthly VoIP service at office or home.
Examples of VoIP Adapter are Linksys PAP2 Phone Adapter, D-Link DVG-1402SL, Sipura SPA-3000, etc.
Telephone Sets
The telephone sets acts as the interface between user and service. It is an essential VoIP hardware device that functions as an input and an output device. User can choose from various types of phones available with VoIP as per the requirements and conditions.
VoIP Routers
A router connects the user PC to the internet. It also fragments and reassembles the packets to be travelled over the net. Router also routes the packets to their destination. In addition to routing of packets, it also interacts with other routers on the Internet. The voice packets which travelled over the internet, crosses many routers prior to reaching destination.
User is required to use an ADSL router if he has an ADSL broadband connection. In case, user is using wireless internet connection, he is required to use a wireless router. Most of the wireless router comes with additional functionality to work with both the wireless and wired networks. Wireless routers have cable ports to plug in the network cables and devices.
Examples of VoIP routers are Linksys WRT54G, Belkin Wireless Pre-N, Netgear WGR826V, etc.
