Make Cheap VoIP Calls on 3G by AT&T and Apple

As per the recent development, Apple has allowed the facility of making VoIP calls over the 3G network. This would lead to potentially huge savings on both domestic and international calls. This is because VoIP calls use data minutes in place of voice minutes and thus allows the users to purchase a plan with minimal number of minutes till the time user have an unlimited data plan. With this plan, user can make unlimited calls by using data minutes.

iCall is the first VoIP product  that is designed to be run on iPhone and this free application offers the users, three different ways to pay for calls.

First way allows the user to sign up for free calls to the United States and Canada. User will listen to the advertisement before making a call and the time duration for such call is limited to five minutes. These advertisements sponsor the cost of the call.

The second way is a pay-per-call plan, which allows the user to make calls to international destinations at a per-minute price which offers huge discounts as compared to other carrier prices. Also, user can use these minutes as per his convenience as the never expire. User is required to deposit money before using this service and amount varies from $5 to $50.

The third way is a $10-a-month plan that provides unlimited calls in the United States and Canada and user is not required to listen to the advertisements before the call. User are charged an additional fee for making calls to foreign locations, however the call charges are very cheap at lower per-minute price as compared to pay-per-call plan.

As per recently released news, Fring also has claimed to be first in allowing VoIP calls on 3G; however iCall was available on App Store before Fring application.  The test results of the Fring application shows that it gets connected to the server after many attempts. Some of the numbers didn’t connect and some are connected. Fring does offer more features in comparison to iCall, including messaging and video calls. Also international calls by Fring can be paid through the user’s Skype account.

Skype is also ready to launch its 3G application on VoIP.  There is a bit of confusion regarding the Apples rules for 3G.  The iPhone and newly introduced iPad are sharing the same operating system; however iPad comes with a slightly newer version of that system. The Newly launched iPad rules allow the developers to use 3G services over VoIP.  Skype  has commented that it is not clear on whether the new rules related to using 3G services over VoIP are applicable for iPhones also as they are using the a slightly older version of the system.

Thus as per the press release issued by iCall, Apple has updated its iPhone software Developement Kit (SDK) and is now allowing the user to use applications that make VoIP calls over 3G wireless  networks. Previously, the VoIP calls are allowed only over a WiFi connection.
